Professional Support for ADHD in Sydney

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition. It affects how the brain manages attention, motivation, impulses, and emotional regulation.

ADHD is a neurodivergence, meaning your brain processes information differently from other, more ‘typical’ brains. Neurodivergent brains exhihit great strengths – like creativity, quick thinking, empathy, and high energy – but they can also face challenges with focus, organisation, and consistency.

How does ADHD present?

ADHD can present in three main ways:
• Primarily inattentive (difficulty sustaining attention, forgetfulness, disorganisation)
• Primarily hyperactive-impulsive (restlessness, interrupting, acting quickly or impulsively without thinking)
• Or a combined presentation of both of the above

It’s not about laziness or lack of intelligence or capability. It’s simply about how your nervous system is wired.

How do I know if I have ADHD?

Many people begin to wonder about ADHD after years of feeling ‘different’, overwhelmed, agitated, bored or frustrated with themselves or others.

You might notice:

Difficulty starting or finishing tasks
Frequently losing things or missing appointments
• Hyper-focus on certain things that really interest you, but struggling with everyday responsibilities
Emotional intensity or rejection sensitivity
Chronic procrastination despite good intentions
Feeling exhausted from trying to keep up.

Diagnostic Criteria

A formal diagnosis is typically made by a qualified clinician (such as a psychiatrist, a trained GP or a psychologist) using criteria from the DSM-5-TR.

To meet diagnostic criteria, symptoms must:
• Be persistent for at least six months
• Appear in more than one setting (e.g., work, home, school)
• Interfere with daily functioning

Diagnosis usually involves a detailed history and symptom checklists, and is necessary if you wish to consider medication avenues.

Whether you have been formally diagnosed or not, our counsellors can help you better understand your experience of neurodivergence, and support you with a range of practical strategies to help you manage its impact. If appropriate, we can also help guide you toward a formal assessment.

What to expect in sessions for ADHD

Counselling for ADHD is supportive, practical, and tailored. We can help you:

• Understand how ADHD shows up uniquely for you
• Build executive functioning skills
• Develop emotional regulation tools
• Create structure that feels supportive, not restrictive
• Navigate work, study, parenting, or relationships

We work at your pace.

Whether you want coping strategies, emotional support, or space to make sense of a new diagnosis, we focus our attention on what matters most to you.

Taking the Next Step

Don’t live your life wondering if your life and relationships could be easier. You don’t need to wait for a crisis. And you don’t need a formal diagnosis. Our counsellors are empathetic, supportive and highly skilled in the provision of support for ADHD and neurodivergence.

Contact our friendly staff Associated Counsellors & Psychologists online or via telephone. We’ll match you with the right counsellor with experience in ADHD.

Quality Matters in Therapy

Choosing the right therapist for couples counselling isn’t just about qualifications. It’s about connection, depth, and real experience.

Our team includes senior psychologists and counsellors who bring empathy, insight, and practical strategies that create lasting change.

We’ve handpicked professionals who are not only highly trained, but also genuinely care about helping people move forward in their relationships.

Emergency Support Resources

If you are feeling overwhelmed, unsafe, or in crisis, immediate help is available. You don’t have to face this alone. The following services provide 24/7 support across Australia:

  • Lifeline Australia  24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention services.
    📞 Call: 13 11 14
  • Beyond Blue Support Service   For mental health support, including grief, anxiety, and depression.
    📞 Call: 1300 22 4636
  • Suicide Call Back Service   Professional 24/7 telephone and online counselling for people affected by suicide.
    📞 Call: 1300 659 467
  • Kids Helpline  24/7 counselling service for young people aged 5-25.
    📞 Call: 1800 55 1800
  • Emergency Services (Police, Fire, Ambulance) For immediate danger or life-threatening situations.
    📞 Call: 000

That depends on what you need right now. If you are feeling overwhelmed and want support with coping, relationships, work, study, or emotional wellbeing, counselling can be a very good place to start — even without a diagnosis. If you are seeking diagnostic clarity, documentation, workplace or university accommodations, or want to explore medication, a formal assessment pathway may be more appropriate. Many people begin with counselling and decide later whether they want to pursue assessment.

We provide counselling and therapeutic support for ADHD and neurodivergence. If you are seeking a formal diagnosis, we can help you understand the assessment pathway and guide you towards an appropriate clinician.

Counselling and medication serve different purposes. Counselling can help you build practical tools, improve emotional regulation, and better manage everyday life. Medication, where appropriate, is something that needs to be discussed with a qualified medical professional as part of a formal assessment and treatment process.

In most cases, we can arrange your first appointment within a week. We aim to make the process clear and straightforward so you can access support without unnecessary delay.

We offer both in-person counselling in Sydney and online sessions via telehealth. Online counselling can be a flexible and effective option for people with busy schedules, work commitments, family responsibilities, or a preference for attending therapy from home.

No. You do not need a formal ADHD diagnosis to begin counselling. Many people start therapy because they are struggling with focus, overwhelm, procrastination, emotional regulation, or relationship difficulties and want support now. If a formal assessment would be helpful, we can also guide you towards the right next steps.

Yes. Counselling can be helpful whether you have a diagnosis, strongly suspect ADHD, or are simply trying to understand yourself more clearly. Therapy can help you make sense of your patterns, reduce self-criticism, and develop practical strategies that work with the way your mind operates.

ADHD counselling can help with more than concentration. Many adults seek support for procrastination, disorganisation, inconsistent motivation, emotional reactivity, low frustration tolerance, burnout, people-pleasing, rejection sensitivity, relationship conflict, and the feeling that everyday life is harder than it seems to be for other people. Therapy can help you understand these patterns, work with your strengths, and develop strategies that are actually sustainable.

ADHD counselling is usually practical, supportive, and tailored to the way you function best. Sessions may focus on understanding how ADHD shows up in your life, building routines that are realistic, improving emotional regulation, reducing procrastination, managing overwhelm, and addressing the impact ADHD can have on relationships, work, parenting, or study. Some people come for tools and structure, while others also need help with self-criticism, shame, or the exhaustion of feeling constantly behind.

Yes. ADHD often affects relationships in ways that are easily misunderstood. One partner may experience forgetfulness, inconsistency, emotional reactivity, shutdown, lateness, unfinished tasks, or difficulty following through, while the other may feel unseen, overloaded, or resentful. Counselling can help make these patterns more understandable, reduce blame, improve communication, and create more workable ways of managing conflict, responsibilities, and support.
